چکیده

This paper addresses the problem of frequency control for non-synchronous AC areas connected by a multi-terminal HVDC grid. It proposes a decentralized control scheme for the DC voltages of the HVDC converters aimed to make the AC areas collectively react to power imbalances. A theoretical study shows that, by using local information only, the control scheme allows to significantly reduce the impact of a power imbalance by distributing the associated frequency deviation over all areas. A secondary frequency control strategy that can be combined with this control scheme is also proposed so as to restore the frequencies and the power exchanges to their nominal values in the aftermath of a power imbalance. Simulation results on a benchmark system with five AC areas illustrate the good performance of the control scheme.

Cooperative frequency control with a multi-terminal high-voltage DC network

We consider frequency control in power systems made of several non-synchronous AC areas connected by a multi-terminal high-voltage direct current (HVDC) grid. We propose two HVDC control schemes to make the areas collectively react to power imbalances, so that individual areas can schedule smaller power reserves. The first scheme modifies the power injected by each area into the DC grid as a fu...

Coordinated primary frequency control among non-synchronous systems connected by a multi-terminal high-voltage direct current grid

The authors consider a power system composed of several non-synchronous AC areas connected by a multi-terminal high-voltage direct current (HVDC) grid. In this context, the authors propose a distributed control scheme that modifies the power injections from the different AC areas into the DC grid so as to make the system collectively react to load imbalances. This collective reaction allows eac...

HVDC-based Fast Frequency Support for Low Inertia Power Systems

This paper analyses and compares different methodologies for supporting system frequency in low inertia power systems using HVDC interconnectors. Reduced system inertia, caused by the massive integration of converter-interfaced renewables and the displacement of conventional synchronous generation, can result in high values of rate of change of frequency (ROCOF), increasing the risk of frequenc...

Coordinated Control Strategies of VSC-HVDC-Based Wind Power Systems for Low Voltage Ride Through

The Voltage Source Converter-HVDC (VSC-HVDC) system applied to wind power generation can solve large scale wind farm grid-connection and long distance transmission problems. However, the low voltage ride through (LVRT) of the VSC-HVDC connected wind farm is a key technology issue that must be solved, and it is currently lacking an economic and effective solution. In this paper, a LVRT coordinat...
